If you want to challenge yourself, then running a half marathon is a great thing to aim for. It's a real achievement, but feels a lot less daunting than signing up for a full marathon of 26.2 blistering miles! If you're going to go through the pain and exhaustion you'll experience running 13.1 miles, then why not do it somewhere beautiful? Fortunately, we have the perfect half-marathon option for you!
The Aviemore Half Marathon will take you through some of the most stunning Scottish countryside. One of the best aspects is the atmosphere which is electric with crowds of support for each and every participant. The whole day is filled with excitement and support from everyone involved in the day. You really can't pick a better place for an event like this.
There are two routes to choose from. As well as the half marathon route, there is also a 10K route. Both options have the same start and finish lines.
To enter, you need to pay a participation fee that is usually under £40. The money is given as a donation to the Speyside Trust.
The event takes place in October, so the weather can be unpredictable. This is Scotland, after all, so you should come prepared. The routes both take you along forest tracks and trails, which can be uneven underfoot, so you need a good pair of trainers.
The starting line is a little way out of town, at the Badaguish Cairngorm Outdoor Centre. It's about a 15-minute drive from Ravenscraig House.
If you want to watch the race and be at the finish line at the end of the race, your best option is to walk from the guest house. It will take you around 15 minutes, depending on the crowds. It's a great way to soak up the atmosphere before the runners arrive.
All the money raised from the event goes to the Speyside Trust. They are a charitable organisation that offers short break care holidays for people with disabilities. It's a really worthwhile charity and definitely a great cause to complete this half-marathon for!
